Field falls to St. Vincent St. Mary 3-1 in season opener
BRIMFIELD, OH- It was opening day of the high school baseball season in Portage County on Saturday. The Field Falcons, coming off of an 19-5 season a year ago, hosted the St. Vincent St. Mary Fighting Irish. The Irish talented arms would be too tough to overcome for the Falcons as the fell to the Irish 3-1.
Landon Homan started on the bump for the Falcons. He struck out the first batter of the game and after giving up a two out single to Tyler Slone he was able to retire the side on a ground ball to short.

Field was able to draw first blood in the bottom half. Joey Conroy led off with a four pitch walk. He reached second on an errant pickoff attempt before Slone struck out the next two Falcon batters. With two outs Drexal McAmis came through with an opposite field double scoring Conroy giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Slone struck out Sam Confer to end the inning.

The sides were retired in order for both teams the next two innings as we headed to the top of the 4th with the Falcons holding a 1-0 lead.
SVSM started inning number four with back to back singles by Slone and Zack Kurkey. After an infield fly to second base recorded the first out, Ashton Tamzarian laced a 2-run double into the right centerfield gap giving the Fighting Irish a 2-1 lead. Homan was able to retire the next two batters and end the damage.
In the bottom half of the 4th Field was able to put two runners on with two outs as Confer singled and Homan was hit by a pitch. Slone was able to induce a groundout to end the threat. Field trailed 2-1 after four.

Homan started the 5th by walking Logan Henderson. He then retired Ian Boykin on a ground ball to first moving Henderson to second. Field coach Joe Peterson then made a pitching change bringing on senior Logan Roberts. Boykin moved to third on a pickoff throw attempt that went into centerfield. He would score on a sacrifice fly to right field by Matthew Engelhart. Roberts got out of the inning after a pop out to third. SVSM led 3-1.
The sides were retired in order for both teams the next inning. The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the 6th when Caden Kolesar led off with a double, but Irish lefty Matthew Large retired the next three straight preventing any damage. They took a 3-1 lead into the 7th.
SVSM was able to load the bases in the top half of the 7th on a single, an error and a hit by pitch. Roberts was able to work out of the jam getting Rylan Hurley to ground out to second base.
Large was able to retire the Falcons in order in the bottom half to preserve the 3-1 win for SVSM.
Field was only able to muster up three hits and the lone run on the McAmis first inning double. Landon Homan allowed 2 earned runs in 4-1/3 innings while Logan Roberts threw 2-2/3 innings of shutout ball in relief.
Field will look to bounce back on Thursday when they host the Woodridge Bulldogs.
